The 4 Simple Stages of an Engaging Email Funnel Strategy
The 4 Simple Stages of an Engaging Email Funnel Strategy Throw a piece of swag at a marketing conference and youââ¬â¢ll (lightly) hit someone who can tell you about the importance of an email list. Theyââ¬â¢re not wrong. Despite new and flashy marketing channels constantly popping up, email remains one of the strongest for so many companies. According to eMarketer, 73% of in-house marketers worldwide said that email marketing provided a strong ROI in 2017, making it the most commonly reported answer in their survey. But most of the email marketing adviceà out there is focused on building your list. Collecting subscribers. Hoarding fans. They donââ¬â¢t explain how to actually turn those subscribers into leads and customers. Remember, building your list is only the first step in the email marketing process and converting your audience into customers. If you donââ¬â¢t use that list wisely and plan how to move subscribers to the next step, the rest of the buyerââ¬â¢s journey will never take place. But when used strategically, email marketing is one of the most all-encompassing marketing channels you can use. It doesnââ¬â¢t just build an audience or generate leads, itââ¬â¢s incredibly effective in every single stage of the sales funnel. From capturing visitors at the awareness stage to nurturing current customers and retaining them long-term, email reliably gets results. Does this make you want to shape up your strategyà ASAP? Good. Itââ¬â¢ll be worth it. Before you get to work, letââ¬â¢s break down what your email strategy should accomplish at every stage of the customer journey, and examples and ideas to get your brainstorming started. The 4 Simple Stages of an Engaging Email Funnel Strategy by @thatbberg via @Table of Contents: Step 1: Generate Leads at the Top of the Funnel Step 2: Nurture Leads in the Middle of the Funnel Step 3: Convert Customers at the Bottom of the Funnel Step 4: Activate Customers and Retain Them Forever Step 1: Generate Leads at the Top of the Funnel Building your list may not be the beginning and end of a strong email marketing strategy, as some marketers make it out to be, but itââ¬â¢s definitely the start of the process. Email opt-ins are one of the best ways to capture website and social media visitors at the top of the marketing funnel who arenââ¬â¢t yet ready to buy. When someone comes to your blog, for example, and enjoys the content and overall experience but isnââ¬â¢t ready to buy your product, subscribing to your email list is an alternative call-to-action that still brings them closer to becoming a customer. Someone handing you their email is essentially inviting you to market to them, as long as you provide value as well. Given how hard it can be to reach your audience on other platforms, say algorithm-determined news feeds, you want this direct relationship with as many people in your audience as possible. But theyââ¬â¢re just as aware of how personal giving you their email address is, compared to something like following you on Instagram. Because of that, getting strangers to subscribe to your email list can be a challenge - especially if theyââ¬â¢ve got hundreds of emails in their inbox already. Hereââ¬â¢s how you can rise to the challenge and more to build a thriving, converting list of subscribers, based on ââ¬â¢s own success building a list of over 300,000: Send a Value-Packed Weekly Newsletter The email newsletters weââ¬â¢re talking about arenââ¬â¢t just your PDF pamphlet or weekly sales promos some businesses will call a newsletter. No, we mean high-value content that inspires, nurtures, and converts. Thatââ¬â¢s what a good newsletter looks like, for example ââ¬â¢s own weekly recap of new marketing advice, both from here on the blog and around the web. (Image source: https://.com/blog/how-to-make-an-email-newsletter/) In an era where weââ¬â¢re obsessed with custom lead magnets and interactive webinars and newer, flashier content types, it takes great content to make one worth signing up for. To make sure your newsletter can stand on its own in terms of attracting subscribers, make sure to: Determine a focused goal to base your newsletter strategy around, such as generating or nurturing qualified leads, driving customer renewals, etc. Create a theme and content strategyà your newsletters can follow, like ââ¬â¢s theme of the latest content to help marketers achieve their goals. Write newsletter copy that cultivates your brand. They may have an old reputation for being promotional and impersonal, some of the more popular modern newsletters, like TheSkimmà and The Hustle, build such an engaged community by developing strong brand voicesà and personalities. Anyone can get started, no fancy technology needed. MailChimpà is free to get started with and powers some of the most popular brands on the internet, so you can start simple with it and build your strategies out further as you scale. Offer Lead Magnets Like Free Tools and Resources If sending a value-based newsletter every week for the foreseeable future, in addition to any more promotional emails, doesnââ¬â¢t fit into your content strategy, there are lots of other ways to attract new subscribers. For example, trading a free asset in exchange for a readerââ¬â¢s email address is a great way to provide a ton of extra value without the ongoing content creationà a newsletter can involve. You can create and develop the lead magnet once and promote and mention it in blog posts and other content for months. Trading a free asset in exchange for a readerââ¬â¢s email address is a great way to provide a ton of...Popular and easy-to-create lead magnets include: Checklists and cheat sheets Fillable or printable workbooks Ebooks Spreadsheet and document templates You can also take free offers to the next level and instead of creating a PDF or downloadable asset, you can create an interactive tool subscribers can get get ongoing value from. Some great examples include ââ¬â¢s Headline Analyzer, Mentionââ¬â¢s Brand Grader, and Unbounceââ¬â¢s Landing Page Analyzer. Run Email Courses and Challenges To combine the educational value of content offers with the ongoing value of tools, something like an email course or challenge can give you the best of both options. They can involve a full series of emails, as opposed to a single downloadable asset. This can both help content feel more manageable to consumers, and help you build up a relationship with them over the course of a few days instead of a one-time transaction. You can choose to educate your new subscribers over the course of a few days, such a free 5-day email course, or focus on more action-oriented content with a challenge to achieve a certain result within the length of the offer. Hold Audience-Building Live Webinars The final lead generation tool to mention today is live webinars. Live, video-based content is a powerful tool at every stage of the funnel, so it will be mentioned again, but one of the most valuable elements of webinars is how willing people are to hand over an email to attend them. That makes them gold for lead generation, especially when you really perfect it. Lead generation webinars can be done over and over on the same topic and taken on tour to new audiences, like a virtual public speaking circuit. Lead generation webinars can be done over and over on the same topic and taken on tour to new...This exact strategy was a major factor in growing ConvertKità from $98k to $625k in monthly recurring revenue. ConvertKitââ¬â¢s marketing team used collaborative webinars with affiliates to build an early audience and community around their product. They were able to perform the same webinar more than 150 times, each time to a new audience that converted incredibly well. Years later, itââ¬â¢s a tactic they continue today. With marketing-focused webinar tools that let you worry more about the content than technology, itââ¬â¢s become easy for businesses of any size to build full marketing campaigns around webinars. For example, ClickMeetingà is one option thatââ¬â¢s not just for running webinars, but converting from them with features like built-in call-to-action buttons. (Image source: https://clickmeeting.com/tools) Step 2: Nurture Leads in the Middle of the Funnel Okay, youââ¬â¢ve found a lead gen tactic that works for you. Once youââ¬â¢re generating leads and subscribers, you need to do something with them. Next, you want to: Qualify them as potential customers, and Segment them according to your teamââ¬â¢s buyer personas Once youââ¬â¢ve qualified someone and matched them to a buyer persona, you can match them to your most relevant product, service, value proposition, etc., and then plan emails that strategically guide them towards purchase. It sounds complicated, but with most email marketing and marketing automation software, itââ¬â¢s done easily and automatically. For example, you can segment your leads before ever interacting with them based on simple information, like: Which lead magnet, form, or web page they subscribed through Website and subscriber behavior Demographic information Lead scoring can be done the same way. And remember, drip sequences are your friend! By consistently emailing leads, you keep them engaged and have the opportunity to learn more about them through their opens, clicks, and replies. By consistently emailing leads, you keep them engaged and have the opportunity to learn more about...During nurturing, you want to continue providing value, building trust, and developing a relationship with your lead up until the final moment before they convert. Each email is a new opportunity to build more rapport with them as well as learn about their behavior and customize your marketing accordingly. You want to build up to the moment of conversion: where youââ¬â¢re talking to the right person with the right message and the right timing. How do you do that? Here are some of the types of emails that nurture leads and get them to the next stage of the sales funnel. Use Self-Segmentation Emails A self-segmentation email presents different options to your leads and lets them select which is most relevant. You can then move them into appropriate email segments based on which option or options they click. You have lots of options for how you can segment, based on whatââ¬â¢s most useful to your business: What types of content they prefer Which topics theyââ¬â¢re most interested in Goal or reason for signing up for your list This works great as a welcome or confirmation email when someone first signs up, but you can ask someone to self-segment more than once and at any point in the buyerââ¬â¢s journey. Everyone appreciates the promise of more relevant and useful emails. Everyone appreciates the promise of more relevant and useful emails.Send Case Studies and Customer Stories As you start to introduce your leads more directly to your product, you want to do as much as you can to help them see themselves using your product or service. While segmentation so you can more specifically talk to people is great, you need to ââ¬Å"showâ⬠as well as ââ¬Å"tell.â⬠Sending leads case studies, success stories, testimonials, and other social proof featuring customers similar to them will do that. Keep Providing Free Resources Til The End Finally, continuing to offer free content thatââ¬â¢s jammed with value will continue to make an impact throughout the funnel. As a lead moves through your nurturing content and you learn more about them, you can even get more relevant, personal, and valuable with that content. For example, by shifting the topics of your webinars from broader content to more solution-specific ideas, you can use them for nurturing as well as lead generation. Monitoring software Mention, for example, offers both topical webinars like those discussed above (like one they hosted with !), as well as more product-focused webinars that are ridiculously helpful for those already interested in them. (Image source: https://info.mention.com/live-training) If you do provide multiple formats of nurturing content, like adding webinars to your email sequences, make sure youââ¬â¢re able to track results both per channel and for your whole funnel. For example, marketing dashboards like Cyfeà let you pull in information from multiple apps and tools to track all stages and locations of the funnel in one place. You would just add pre-built widgets for your tools like Google Analytics, InfusionSoft, and Unbounce at their proper places in your funnel map. (Image source: https://www.cyfe.com/marketing-dashboard) Step 3: Convert Customers at the Bottom of the Funnel Congrats! Your email lead gen and nurturing are fantastic and have primed leads perfectly. Youââ¬â¢ve shown value, built a relationship, and fired off all the psychological triggersà that have people ready to buy. This is obviously what youââ¬â¢ve been waiting for, the moment when your funnel (literally) pays off. With your email marketing funnel so carefully set up with the steps weââ¬â¢ve gone over, like using segmentation to provide super personalized value, you have a great chance of converting a new customer. And segmentation is about to come in handy yet again. In addition to using it to deliver more personalized nurturing campaigns, you can use it to offer your product or service in the most relevant way possible to each individual prospect. Between automated funnels and sequences and your seasonal/regular marketing calendar, you have lots of options for reaching your customers, all of which will be more successful the better the rest of your funnel is segmented. By combining segmentation with different conversion strategies like those listed below, youââ¬â¢re sure to be within reach once your customer has reached their moment of decision and purchase. Recommended Reading: How to Create a Marketing Strategy That Will Skyrocket Your Results By 9,360%" Retarget Subscribers With Emails and Ads Once again, at this point youââ¬â¢re searching for that perfect moment when your prospect is ready to buy. At this point, youââ¬â¢ve built up enough of a reputation with them that ads placed in front of them will convert well. (Image source: https://okdork.com/how-to-spend-your-first-100-on-retargeting-ads/) You donââ¬â¢t need to stick to just email to reach them affordably - retargeting adsà can be some of the most cost-effective kinds of paid marketing. For example, AppSumoà was able to achieve a 224% ROI from a recent retargeting campaign. That said, email retargeting may be all you need, especially with your warmest leads, like e-commerce abandoned carts. Abandoned cart emailsà find people whoââ¬â¢ve essentially already decided to buy your product, so offering it one more time is often an easy win. (Image source: https://support.bigcommerce.com/articles/Public/Using-the-Abandoned-Cart-Saver) When Henna Caravanà first started using retargeting and abandoned cart emails, it had a major impact on acquisition of first-time customers. Founder Jessica McQueen explained to BigCommerce what it was like watching the results come in: ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s turned into the most exciting part of my day, seeing an abandoned cart get converted into a sale...I had no idea that people were leaving their cart empty and how much was sitting on the table at the end of the day.â⬠Create Time and Urgency-Based Offers Another great way to convert well-nurtured prospects is through offers based on limited time and other urgency factors. By building authentic and ethical deadlinesà into your marketing, like expiring offers and discounts, into your funnel, you give warm prospects a reason to convert today versus next week. A great tool for this, for example, is Deadline Funnel. It lets you easily create customized deadlines and scarcity offers for each lead, based on different email and website activity. So you could trigger a funnel with an expiring deadline for: New leads whoââ¬â¢ve just signed up for your list Existing customers to celebrate occasions like birthdays Prospects who have visited certain high-intent pages on your website Itââ¬â¢s a ââ¬Å"get ââ¬Ëem while theyââ¬â¢re hotâ⬠approach that can lead to crazy high conversion rates when the situation is right. Recommended Reading: How to Effectively Measure Marketing ROI With Google Analytics and a Simple Formula Onboard Free Trial Users Finally, if youââ¬â¢re selling something with some kind of free trial like software, you canââ¬â¢t assume that theyââ¬â¢re sold once theyââ¬â¢ve signed up for a free trial. The true conversion - them becoming a paying customer - hasnââ¬â¢t happened yet. You still need to further engage and nurture them, and this is where it matter most. You can introduce tutorials, use cases, and more product-related content to get them to the final purchase point. For example, as noted in Val Geislerââ¬â¢s onboarding teardown, Mixmaxà sends their free users an introduction to the product in the form of an email course or educational sequence. (Image source: valgeisler.com/email-onboarding-tear-down-mixmax/ Step 4: Activate Customers and Retain Them Forever Once someone becomes a customer and reaches the bottom of the sales funnel, you might think your job as a marketer is over. Sorry, but thatââ¬â¢s not the case. Retaining customers and extending your relationship with them lets you optimize your lifetime customer value and increase your marketing ROI. So once someone becomes a customer, enjoy a very brief break, because soon itââ¬â¢s time to start working towards their next conversion. Email is one of the best ways to keep in touch with and nurture them here, too. You want to continually prove and increase value, let customers improve their experience, and make your product sticky in their lives, so theyââ¬â¢ll renew, upsell, refill, or whatever you need them to do. Itââ¬â¢s not too different from nurturing prospective customers, except that you can and should talk about your products and services more directly to keep customers engaged. And there are so many ways to do that. Recommended Reading: How to Select Marketing Metrics and KPIs to Monitor Keep Customers Engaged With Your Product One important way to use email is to keep people needing what you offer. Whether itââ¬â¢s an app, physical product, or service, remind them and help them keep it in their lives. (Image source: mine) I love the way Grammarlyà does this. Since I use the free Chrome plugin running in the background, itââ¬â¢s not always at the forefront of my mind. But their weekly progress report emails giving me helpful stats and compliments (ââ¬Å"You were quite the busy beeâ⬠), along with CTAs to use and upgrade my free account never let it fade to the background for long. Find Organic Upsell and Cross-Sell Opportunities In addition to keeping customers coming back, you also want to find opportunities to sell them bigger or related offers. The key to doing this without coming off as pushy, youââ¬â¢ll want to look for ways to recommend things in the context of the value you provide and your customerââ¬â¢s life. (Image source: mine) A great example of this is Care/Of vitamins. They send frequent product-based emails and newsletters that are super helpful and insightful, customized based on what products you buy from them. It allows customers to learn more about their health and products theyââ¬â¢re already, and get even more free value. They win you over so well that the upsells and calls-to-action in the emails are completely natural and truly enticing. Activate Advocates With Referral and Word-of-Mouth Campaigns Finally, getting customers to buy again isnââ¬â¢t the only way to get more value and ROI from them. Customers have friends, colleagues, neighbors, and other people who might be your perfect customers. Advocacy marketing, referrals, and word-of-mouth let you use happy customers to find new ones just like them. While it takes a more mature product and funnel and should only be offered to satisfied and engaged customers, incentivizing already satisfied customers to share that satisfaction. Create a Yellow Brick Road With Your Email Funnels By now, youââ¬â¢ve seen multiple ways you can use email marketing at every stage of the sales funnel: You can generate leads with lead magnets, challenges, and other valuable free content Nurture those leads by segmenting and personalizing your emails and communication Convert them with retargeting, urgency, and epic onboarding Keep customers engaged long-term with customer emails and recommendations Whatever is holding back your funnel from achieving your marketing goals, you can pinpoint what stage of the journey is the problem and create an email funnel strategy to solve it.

Group conformity Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Group conformity - Essay Example It is important to note that some may obey and adhere to the requirements of the groups where they belong while others may oppose them. Whether they oppose or conform to the standards of their groups; one thing is sure - groups affect them either socially, psychologically or even physically. This paper will explore group conformity; its meaning, types, causes and effects, experiments on the same and recommendations. At the onset of this paper, it is expedient to be well acquainted with group conformity. According to the TheFreeDictionary, conformity is defined as, ââ¬Å"action or behavior in correspondence with socially accepted standards, convections or rules.â⬠Group conformity can also be defined as, ââ¬Å"yielding to group pressuresâ⬠and can also be called ââ¬Å"majority influence or group pressureâ⬠(McLeod). For people to be accepted in the various groups, they must adhere to the norms and rules and regulations of such groups, and must behave in a manner acce pted by the group members. They have to alter their behaviors in a way that is acceptable to the written and unwritten codes of association of their groups. There are consequences associated with non-compliance and rewards for compliance with group norms. The consequences may include: rejection, seclusion and stigmatization. Since the consequences are unpleasant, people are forced to toe the line and follow the dictates of the group. Further, group pressure is reinforced by rewards like a psychological feeling of belonging, material benefits and acceptance. Group conformity is a great influence that alters the behaviors of people to be in line with what is expected by a group. At times people may be forced to suspend reasoning for compliance and for the survival of a group. Group conformity is a subject that has elicited a lot of debate in social sciences like psychology and it has been subdivided into various types. According to McLeod, ââ¬Å"Man (1969) identified three types of c onformity; normative, informational and ingratiational.â⬠In normative conformity, members of the group bow to the pressures of the group to allow them to fit in pursuit of the rewards. The driving force for compliance is the fear of the consequences that can be faced in the event of disobedience. McLeod observes that in normative conformity individuals bow to the majority pressure in the public arena but internally reject them. Letââ¬â¢s give an illustration: in political spheres, individuals often find themselves conforming to the notion of democracy but in the real sense the minority are always dissatisfied but they just move on with the group since they lack options. It is a fact that that learning is a life-long process and an individual who lacks knowledge may choose to change behaviors to fit in a group with the aim of acquiring the same; in essence that is informational conformity (McLeod). Knowledge is a very precious commodity in life and people often endeavor to o btain it since it is associated with power. This can be practical in a learning environment where one copes with the norms and the rules of a learning institution in order to acquire knowledge. Finally, ingratiational conformity is founded on peopleââ¬â¢s strong desire to benefit from the warmth of acceptance within the group and the kindness that they can derive from group membership. McLeod notes that this conformity is similar to normative conform

Food Safety; Pests and Vectors; Air Quality Essay
Food Safety; Pests and Vectors; Air Quality - Essay Example Among the two approaches stated above; training the restaurant employees seems more practicable and productive. This approach has also been applied at Philadelphia in 2009; Don Sapatkin (2009) explains that they adapted a risk-based approach in which emphasis was given to food workerââ¬â¢s knowledge and behavior. It is very important for them to comprehend as to how contamination is spread and how to prevent it. Frequent inspections by restaurant inspectors also play a crucial role in maintaining a good and healthy standard of food service. Personal hygiene of the workers in the restaurants is mandatory. It is noticed that restaurant owners serve much time on the cleanliness of the kitchens and tables etc. but donââ¬â¢t pay attention if the cooks and workers are washing their hands at regular intervals. The workers should be trained and made aware of the food-borne illnesses they are likely to transmit through their food if they are not hygiene cautious. US Food and Drug Administration (2009) states that there is another very important factor regarding food safety; which is the knowledge of temperatures for cooking specific ingredients .e.g. each portion of cooked chicken must reach a minimal internal temperature of 165F for 15 seconds. They should also be aware as to which food is more prone to develop bacteria and at what temperature they should be cooked to remove them. Workers should be urged to wear head gears whenever they are in contact with food to promote a proactive approach rather than a reactive approach. Another thing that should be monitored is that the temperatures of refrigerators are maintained at a suitable temperature. It is often noticed by inspectors that the air temperature of walk-in refrigerators are kept warm. Question 2: Describe the recommendations you would give the public to prevent further spread of West Nile Virus by mosquitoes. Describe the

Tsotsi directed by Gavin Hood and Chris Abanis Nigerian novel Graceland Essay Example for Free
Tsotsi directed by Gavin Hood and Chris Abanis Nigerian novel Graceland Essay How do the names of main characters in the film Tsotsi and novel Graceland define their identity? When comparing the South African movie Tsotsi directed by Gavin Hood and Chris Abanis Nigerian novel Graceland, both are stories of young men struggling with their poverty-stricken fates. In these African cultures, the names of central characters Tsotsi and Elvis are more than just a reference; they carry the clues to their past and the explanation to their present as they endure journeys of self-discovery. In the film, main character Tsotsi embodies his native label. In the local vernacular of South African townships-comprised of Afrikaans and a mixture of local dialects such as Zulu, Xhosa, Tswana and Sotho-the term tsosti can literally be translated to thug. With it comes the historical association of the 1930s urban youth gangs that ruthlessly ruled at the top of the ghettos hierarchy. Although in the past the name tsotsi carried a glamorous gangster image, the word is now used to describe displaced young criminals. This history of the word parallels the characters past. Tsotsi is seemingly comfortable in his role as a cold-hearted gang leader, but the viewer questions his motives as the film progressively exposes his troubled past. Hood uses flashbacks to portray Tsotsi as a young boy in his last moments with his bed-ridden mother. As he reaches out to hold her hand, the scene is slow-moving as if visually symbolizing the strength and endurance of their love. In these defining moments, his mother calls him David-meaning beloved. The appearance of Tsotsis aggressive, drunk father triggers a sudden change in pace-a rapid series of individual close-ups foreshadows a climax in the conflict that will permanently paralyze the characters emotional acceptance of each other. Parting from his mother metaphorically displaces David from his once safe, loving past to Sowetos perilous grasp. When he runs away, he leaves behind his real name-his true identity. The new name Tsotsi allows him to take on the role of a nameless thug that masks his emotional existence and provides him with an outlet for his traumatic childhood. In Graceland, the main characters name is inspired by the late Elvis Presley. Throughout the novel, Albanis choices of names define a culture in which all you had was your name(187). Before money became a universal determinant of status, the sole measure of a man was his name(187). Elviss father, Sunday, lives to take the family from being a nobody to carrying a name people spoke with respect(187). It is therefore untraditional for Elvis, as a future male representative of the family, to be named after his mothers, Beatrices, unaccredited passion. This act alone foreshadows Elviss inability to satisfy the conventional role posed upon him in Nigerias male-dominated society. Beatrice, meaning bringer of joy, invests her love and passion for music in Elvis. In the same way music acts as an escape from the slums grim conditions, Elvis is Beatrices symbol of hope-an innocent new beginning to life. Both Tsotsi and Elvis define their names through the strong connection with their mothers. When Beatrice dies, Elvis loses his source of inspiration, and the reader questions whether he will still be able to live up to his name. Both Tsotsi and Elvis found motivation and purpose in their mothers care, thus struggling to maintain paths of righteousness(171) after their loss. Although initially thriving in his self-adopted role as criminal, Tsotsi is eventually forced to come to terms with his true, restrained identity. In the beginning, he organizes crime with his followers Boston/Teacher-boy, Butcher and Aap (monkey in Afrikaans) at his heels. Together the meanings of the three names describe the characteristics symbolic of a stereotypical street gang; an abandonment of education, a barbaric desire to hurt and kill, and the foolishness of reckless animals. Despite the gangs obedience, it is not long before Bostons guilt consumes him after a murder, and he begins to question Tsotsis mysterious faà ¯Ã ¿Ã ½ade. He verbally tears at the mask Tsotsi has created: Whats your name, Tsotsi? Your real name? Thug? Thats not a real name. The interrogation triggers Tsotsis angry past and fuels a brutal beating of Boston. In the following scene Tsotsi is fleeing the bar, and Hood parallels the event to the flashback of David originally running away from his father. Hoods cross-cutting implies a commonality in Tsotsis state of mind during these two events. Tsotsi has become exactly what he ran away from all those years ago-a bitter, drunk abuser. This inner realization forces Tsotsi to come to terms with his past and re-establish his true identity. After Beatrices death, Elvis struggles to maintain a source of identity. Beatrice has endured him with the role of her idol-she loved Elvis Presley(105)-and Elvis soon begins to physically embody this responsibility. His first job in the novel is entertaining beachside tourists as an Elvis impersonator. While Tsotsi hides from his real name, Elvis tries to embrace the inspiration behind his. Unfortunately, in a life where money overrules passion, dancing is not seen as a sufficient job; it is something everyone does in de bar on Saturday(5). Despite the disparagement, Elvis finds refuge in his physical transformation into the King of Rock. Make-up is a tool to success, metaphorically providing him with the opportunity to escape his menial reality. In this way, Elviss physical mask is similar to Tsotsis emotional shield. Real make-up, however, is seen as a dangerous option(11) because he could be mistaken for a cross-dressing prostitute(11). Elvis resorts to layers of talcum powder and is dissatisfied(11) with his end result. The conservative Nigerian culture denies him freedom in expressing his genuine love for music and dance, and Elvis becomes afraid to define his impersonation as anything other than a materialistic occupation. His mother may have given him a name that carried her artistic inspiration, but she failed to raise him into a life where his true character could flourish without her. It takes Tsotsi years to accept his name, and Elvis a lifetime to try to live up to his. Together, film and novel act as a microcosm for urban African society-a culture in which names are carefully chosen as a representation of character. Hood and Abani use Tsotsi and Elvis to exemplify the powerful role of names in influencing and molding developing characters. Author and director stress the need to take control and establish ourselves in a way that brings honor to our names, and that doesnt allow societys pre-prescribed connotations to define us.

My Education and Career Goals :: Education/Vocation
My high school psychology course intrigued my desire to pursue psychology in college and the courses offered at State University furthermore solidified my interest to continue in this field. I took a particular interest in theories of personality and upon completing cognitive psychology, I wish to obtain a clinical neuropsychology certificate in conjunction with a doctor of psychology in clinical psychology. Throughout my work experience in a market research phone room center, I have encountered many personalities and had the ability to observe how their social contexts has shaped and affected each individual. I am interested in learning and obtaining a better understanding of how various social factors affect individuals. As a part of my undergraduate work, I conducted an independent research project examining trust and attachment style as possible factors that influence conflict resolution. Under the supervision of Dr. Maureen Erber, I collected data from students using various trust, attachment and confliction resolution scales and ran analyses via SPSS. In addition to my confidence about my preparation in psychology, I have earned a minor in Spanish procuring fluency in reading, writing, and speaking the language. Although Spanish is my first language, I learned English an early age that I felt further education in Spanish was valuable. My career goals are to obtain a PsyD in clinical psychology with a specialization in neuropsychology. I am interested in studying the relation between the brain, behavior and psychological processes. I ultimately would like to work in a hospital setting to evaluate and treat victims of stroke, head injury and other neuropsychological problems. I also intend to consult on pharmaceutical drug trials that might influence the central nervous system. I am interested in Adler School of Professional Psychology because it offers education and training in understanding the role of social environment in human functioning. I believe that becoming a socially responsible practitioner will help to develop the skills I need to successfully address various aspects, such as assessment and intervention, to fellow colleagues and patients.

The Sad Comedy of Really Bad Food
Ms. Moskowitz wants to give her readers a sense of her perspective and her style as she begins this restaurant review. Her opening paragraph shows that she seems to have a casual, common-sense approach to her reviews unlike some stuffy, formal food critics. She also shows that her sense of humor will be a component of her reviews. 2. A good server is an essential component of an enjoyable dining experience. Good service stands out in the mind of the customer, and poor service stands out even more. A good server should be conscientious, polite, friendly and knowledgeable. He should attend to his customersââ¬â¢ needs from the moment the customer is seated. He should never exude an air of pretentiousness or aloofness. He should know the menu thoroughly from cover to cover and he should have several recommendations for specialties of the house. He should visit his tables regularly without ever hinting that the customers need to rush through their meals. If the restaurant has a wine men u, he should know the wines well at all price points. In short, he should take pride in his job and treat his customers with respectful, attentive and friendly service.Service sometimes breaks down when management is not supervising the staff satisfactorily. Also, some servers exhibit an unhelpful, casual attitude about their work. Managers should heed the complaints of customers who receive substandard service and either discipline of fire bad servers. A good restaurant with good food cannot thrive with a poor service staff. 3. A restaurant customer is within her rights to send poor food back to the kitchen, and it is advisable for the restaurant to satisfy the customer at the expense of preparing her food again. One instance of poor food quality will cause many customers to cease their visits to that restaurant. Moskowitz may have decided to not send back numerous bad dishes because she thought that the chefs were invariably lacking and incapable of correcting their errors. I would not hesitate to send back food that was clearly prepared improperly. For example, if I requested a medium-rare steak and it arrived as well-done, I would send it back with no regrets whatsoever. 4. Ms Moskowitz displays fairness when she lauds the otherwise poor restaurantââ¬â¢s quality offerings.By complimenting their desserts and wines, she proves that she is open-minded, even eager to find any possible positives that might appeal to her readers. Her praise in the midst of many criticisms shows her sense of balance and fair play for the restaurants she reviews. 5. Ms. Moskowitzââ¬â¢s tone in this review is matter-of-fact, casual, vivid and humorous. She does not hesitate to vividly describe the poor service and the poor food. Yet, ironically, she seems to laugh off her mostly inferior, unsatisfying dining experience. She writes in a casual, almost colloquial tone with frequent injections of humor. This tone, in light of the poor dining experience that she endured, is fitting because it gives the reader a reason to read the entire review despite its many negative comments. Marrakech 1. This navvy, or workman, is referred to as ââ¬Å"an employee of the Municipalityâ⬠because he is so oppressed by his plight that he is incredulous that a man could be casually feeding bread to a gazelle while he and his brethren are perpetually poor and starving. Orwell paints such underprivileged people as helpless, even sub-human, and his pessimistic views of individual opportunity are depressing throughout this short story.2. The average tourist in Marrakech is probably going to be busy and preoccupied with meeting an itinerary. As such, this average observer may not notice the plight of the native citizens. Orwell, with his dark, bleak outlook, searches for and finds victims everywhere he looks. He regularly assumes that the native working people are hapless and helpless to escape their seemingly dire circumstances. Orwell even notes that it took him some time th ere to begin to start noticing the natives in all their wallowing misery. 3.The laborers in Marrakech are ââ¬Å"partly invisibleâ⬠because they are dark-skinned and tend to blend into the landscape. Tourists and observers there are much more likely to notice the natural scenery than the native workers. Orwell invariably paints these natives as helpless victims and their ââ¬Å"invisibilityâ⬠adds to that bleak assessment. In the United States, a land of undeniable opportunity, he would probably also paint menial laborers as invisible and pitiful. To the contrary, ordinary, hard-working citizens are the fabric and driving force behind America and its exceptional history of success.Orwell would be in a difficult position if he tried to paint ordinary American citizens as poor victims who have little chance for success and happiness. 4. Orwellââ¬â¢s Marrakech is saturated with political messages. Chief among them is the supposed victimhood of average, working people. His bleak, pessimistic portrayal of their plight is depressing and debatable. His one-sided view does not mention the positive aspects of these nativesââ¬â¢ lives. Despite living in very trying conditions, these natives must have some happiness and some opportunity to live, work and provide for their families. It is sad and unrealistic how Orwell seems to always paint ordinary people as helpless, joyless victims of their environment. 5. The storks and ââ¬Å"great white birdsâ⬠are metaphors for the ruling white class that has power over the helpless Negro soldiers and slaves. The whites are going in a safe direction while the hapless Negros are forced to sacrifice and go in the other direction. His blanket view of white prejudice towards blacks is insulting and demeaning to honorable people who judge others based on their character and their actions.Orwell cannot help himself as he belabors the dubious point of minority victimhood and helplessness. 6. The five sections in Orwell ââ¬â¢s short story are somewhat incongruent, but are not difficult to follow. Invariably, the images of human nature and the strength of the human spirit are stifled and skewed by Orwellââ¬â¢s jaded, dark and pessimistic views. Evidently, he needed to visit and observe some people who had joy and happiness as part of their lives before he deemed most people as oppressed.

Hw assignment revised Essay
Culture includes everything about a particular groupââ¬â¢s way of life; from high art to the most ordinary behavior (what we eat for breakfast, for example). It is defined as the manner of life for a whole society and the sum of socially transmitted behavioral patterns and can be classified into values, norms, institutions and artifacts. The set of distinctive features of a society or a social group, which includes emotional, spiritual and intellectual, can be called as culture. It encompasses the communityââ¬â¢s ways of existing together, its value systems, customs and ideals. Everything we do, from our food to our behavior can be considered as culture. From the essay, ââ¬Å"From Culture to Hegemony, culture is defined as the norm of life. Barthes who used the model of linguist de Saussure, sought to uncover the latent meanings of the norms. He tried it from boxing to little things. Transmission of culture is done through language, material objects, customs, institutions, and art, passed from one generation to another generation. Usually, this transmission remains intact and ââ¬Å"pureâ⬠; however, when foreign influences set in either through cultural diffusion and/or assimilation, naturally, the native culture will have become irreparably modified. In ââ¬Å"From a Native Daughterâ⬠, Haunaini-Kay Trask, bemoans the rape of her native lands culture. How the haole invaded their land and proceeded to change their history. For her historians like the missionaries from whom she had her education, were a part of then colonizing horde, one part colonized the spirit and the other the mind. She believed that any outsider were to understand them, one should first know their language, their songs, their chants, their customs, and their bond with the ââ¬Ëaina (the land). She said, ââ¬Å"This bond is cultural, it can only be understood culturallyâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ IDEOLOGY: Ideology includes the underlying ideas that shape culture. These ideas are often what we take for granted, i. e. they are unconscious. For example, the idea that success is gained through going to college and getting a high paying job seems so obvious as to be truth. However, it is part of an ideology. A trick in identifying ideologies is to look for undefined terms in a statement. What does ââ¬Å"successâ⬠mean and where did that meaning come from? Ideology is the organized collection of underlying ideas that shape the culture. Being unconscious, they are often taken for granted. They are abstract thoughts applied to reality and every society has an ideology on which they base their actions on. From Marxââ¬â¢s Ideology as quoted in Subculture: the meaning of Style by Dick Hebdidge, ideology is defined as a set of common beliefs that lie beneath the awareness commonly known as ââ¬Å"common senseâ⬠. This common sense, although transparently, validates ideas. These taken for granted phenomena can function as signs, which in turn, will reflect the reality of the culture and can be analyzed through mapping them on a range of potential meanings. Power and class are parameters which extends and vary ideology thus making it achievable to have different levels of divided labor. Our education system is the one who is responsible in instilling the ideology into the individuals of the society. In other words, the ideologies are maps of probable meanings which serve to have persons think their way into positions of power or subordination. HEGEMONY: A form of power usually built on ideologies. Instead of bullying (i. e. using coercion) to get your way, itââ¬â¢s easier and more sustainable to make your victim believe that your way is the right way. For example, car makers donââ¬â¢t have to force us to buy new cars at gunpoint; itââ¬â¢s easier to make us think that getting a new car every couple of years is simply what one does. The underlying ideology might be that newness equals human progress. Hegemony is the subtle almost undetected authority of one individual over another and/or one group of people over another group. This dominance however doesnââ¬â¢t use threats or force. Naturally, the dominant party in our society has their advantages. For example, a dominant party can dictate the terms of trade to its advantage. Moreover, our cultural perspectives became in favor of the dominant group. It controls the way ideas are discarded or neutralized. It happens in a process where hegemony alters our notions of common sense of a given society. According to the Gramsci, hegemony is the association of social groups exerting total social authority through coercion, imposition of thought or shaping consent. Familiar examples of this include the selling of cars where you coerce your buyers to buy because it is only right that you get yourself a car and thinking that it is simply what one does after a few years of using an old car. It may also because of the ideology thatââ¬â¢s behind it is that a new car means an improvement in your lifestyle. Hall is also quoted in Subculture: the meaning of style, in the chapter, From Culture to Hegemony, Hall (1977) was cited saying, ââ¬Å"hegemony refers to the situation in which a provisional alliance of a certain social group exerts total social authority over other subordinate groups not only through coercion or by the direct imposition of ruling ideas but by winning and shaping consent so that the power of the dominating class appears to be legitimate and naturalâ⬠¦ ââ¬Å" DEFAMILIARIZATION: Lastly, defamiliarization, also called ââ¬Å"ostanenieâ⬠is a method of forcing the audience to see common things in an unfamiliar way. It is done in order to improve the insight of the familiar. Religion is a tried and tested way of bringing order to a world of chaotic events. In the article, World View and the Analysis of Sacred Symbols, from the Antioch Review by Clifford Geertz wherein he describes how religion is composed of sets of symbols that are in turn composed of meanings that can only be stored in the symbols. He says that a peopleââ¬â¢s ethos is the way they dress or their movements and the way they talk. In general it is the quality of their lives while the world view is the cognitive aspect reflects how the people view the natural order of things as they are found in their world. All of these things are in some way or another affected by the religion of the people. Geertz considers the wajang as the clearest illustration of the relationship between the metaphysical (i. e. religion, belief etcâ⬠¦) and the people of Javaââ¬â¢s actual values. The wajang is the ritual shadow play using puppets that usually lasts all night and well into the early morning. The gamelan is the director musician and storyteller all in one. The most famous characters in the wajang are the Pendawas and the Korawas, and their endless wars. The Pendawas represent the five senses that must always work together to come up with just and good decisions. They represent calm detachment from the everyday events of life which is the way these myths are interpreted and translated into the actual culture that is in the peoples of Java. The Korawas on the other hand represent passion and indiscretion. They are the representative icons that depict the capacity of religion not only to set the standards of ideal living but also delineate the workings of evil and destruction. Just like the Navajo looks at everything that is good and productive as in the form of a circle and thus evokes the circle in everything they do, so does the Javanese in their quest to detach themselves from the passions of everyday life to transcend into inner serenity and peace. Their world views affect their ethos and in turn dictate how they view their reality and consequently how they react to it. The concept of defamiliarization as defined above is also effectively illustrated in the article by George Orwell, Shooting an Elephant. In this article he tells the readers how he had to kill the elephant not because he had to do it to save the people, or because it is truly a danger, in spite of it having killed a ââ¬Å"coolieâ⬠, he says that he killed the animal to save himself from looking like a fool it is expected of him to not be afraid, to be consistent (and thus consistent in his initial impulse to kill the elephant). His nationality and the empire he represents have created such a concept that as a member of the empire he is expected to conform to. Thus his actions no matter how mundane and ordinary they are will not have correspondingly simple interpretations at least as far as the natives are concerned.

The French Lieutenants Woman essays
The French Lieutenant's Woman essays In The French Lieutenants Woman by John Fowles, the author explores the parallel processes of reading and writing (Hagen,439). In chapter 47, Fowls uses both romance and mystery as an effective strategy for provoking reader interaction. Patricia Hagens Revision Revisited: Reading (and) The French Lieutenants Woman helps to further explain this idea. Throughout the book and especially in this chapter, Sarah Woodruff maintains a sense of mystery that proves to be essential in bringing about an interaction between the readers, characters, and the author. By this point, the plot has fully developed and it is no longer the authors decision of how the story line will end, but the choice of the characters. In chapter 47, Charles realizes that Sarah was a virgin, and must deal with the fact that everything she has said and done was based on a lie. Throughout the novel, Charles has always seen Sarah as an angel, but now views her as the exact opposite, mad, evil, enlacing him in the strangest of nets...but why? (Fowles,354). This question fundamentally changes Charles from a character to an actual person. Based on this moment in the novel, the reader is forced to look at Sarah and Charles as more than just plot objects, but simply as human beings. Through this lens, the reader (re)constructs not only characters, plot, setting the traditional elements of fiction- but also the writing process itself (Hagen,443). Charless impression of Sarah changes, creating the potential for a twist of events. Consequently, the reader becomes so drawn with the writer and characters that the novel is no longer thought of as a finished work of literature, but a text in the process of becoming (Hagen,443). Nonetheless, Charles is confused as to why Sarah has lied to him. However, she herself is unable to explain her actions. This emphasizes her mysterious nature that keeps t...

Avoid these 8 words and phrases in your cover letter if you want to impress
Avoid these 8 words and phrases in your cover letter if you want to impress Youââ¬â¢ve createdà a killer resume and now itââ¬â¢s time to write a cover letter and send off your whole package. Your main goal is to make sure itââ¬â¢s polished, professional, and a perfect summary of why youââ¬â¢re the best candidate for the job. The best cover letters stand out from the crowd, while not falling victim to any common annoyances that can irritate recruiters and compromise your chances before you even get started. Hereââ¬â¢s a list of some of the common words and phrases that will turn off potential employers and stall out your job search. Make sure the impression you are making is the right one!1. ââ¬Å"Alwaysâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Neverâ⬠Speaking in absolutes isnââ¬â¢t a good idea. Situations can change, so itââ¬â¢s silly to box yourself into a corner if thereââ¬â¢s a chance you might backpedal one day. First of all, never say never. You donââ¬â¢t want to come across as rigid. à Keep an open mind about your future, your ability to shift, and the future of your industry. Always is just as tricky- personalities change and you never know how you will react until you face a specific situation. With either extreme, you look like an amateur. Put things in grown-up terms that leave room for adaptability.2. ââ¬Å"To Whom It May Concernâ⬠Your parents might still claim this is the best way to open a letter, but it is way outdated. Put in the extra effort to Google the company and figure out who is most likely to be reading your resume: either an HR manager, a department head, a recruiter, or your future boss. Address your letter that way. (The same goes for ââ¬Å"Dear Sirâ⬠or ââ¬Å"Madam.â⬠)3. ââ¬Å"Handledâ⬠This is a common verb to fall back on when you want to talk about your problem-solving skills or how you put out fires. But it isnââ¬â¢t very descriptive or strong. Also, ââ¬Å"handlingâ⬠customers or coworkers doesnââ¬â¢t really strike the correct tone. Try ââ¬Å"diffused tens e customer relations situationsâ⬠or ââ¬Å"treated difficult customers with respect whileâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ instead. If youââ¬â¢re talking about situations, use specific language: examples like ââ¬Å"led a teamâ⬠or ââ¬Å"created a system toâ⬠describe what you did.4. ââ¬Å"Works well independently or as part of a teamâ⬠This one has been said so often that itââ¬â¢s now off-limits. Find another way to convey both these points by showing how you do this, rather than telling in the same old tired language.5. ââ¬Å"I/meâ⬠Obviously, you canââ¬â¢t get away with using these personal pronouns entirely. Just try to go through your letter at the end and make sure you arenââ¬â¢t abusing the privilege. Keep the ââ¬Å"Iâ⬠s to a minimum.6. ââ¬Å"Looking for a great positionâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ First, no one is looking for a boring or bad position. Letââ¬â¢s be real. Come up with something better and more concrete (and, ideally, more tailored to the positio n you seek), and put that in your objective section or summary instead. Second, the point of the cover letter is to describe whatà you can offer them, not what they can offer you.7. ââ¬Å"I feel thatâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Be confident enough to assert facts. Delete ââ¬Å"I feel thatâ⬠and your sentence automatically becomes more assertive. If you arenââ¬â¢t dealing in facts, try ââ¬Å"I believeâ⬠or ââ¬Å"I am confident thatâ⬠instead. Youââ¬â¢ll come across as much more capable.8. ââ¬Å"Reallyâ⬠Just donââ¬â¢t bother with these empty adjectives (ââ¬Å"veryâ⬠is another one). They have the opposite effect of what youââ¬â¢re going for, by making you seem like youââ¬â¢re overselling or covering for something. Let the details stand for themselves and find another way to spice up the text to make it sing.

Teaching Method Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Teaching Method - Essay Example He does not experience but take inspirations. He does not try to understand but believe in what the teacher says. The student knows that density is mass per unit volume but he does not know what is density; what mass is indicated And what volume are they talking about. The present educational programs are not as good as they should be. Presently the teachers are not fulfilling their task of educating the students properly. Thus a proper system should be developed by the teachers which pave a way for the students to prosper. This article would further give a review about how the students should be taught in a proper manner. Nowadays the college in which I am studying does not focus on building up the students own views. Instead the teachers focus on the views portrayed by them only. For e.g. the teachers give their view in such a way that the students cannot put in their own thoughts into the subject. This type of educational system is ruining the student's future as in the future these students are not capable to put in their own thoughts if any future situation arises. As described by Paulo Friere the present teaching system does not enlighten the students about their studies. It just describes the teachers own feelings and views. The professors nowadays are not giving in different views on the subjects, instead they are just telling one side of the story. This therefore leads the students to have a particular belief derived from their teacher's views. While the teaching system which should be developed all over should include the overall concepts of teaching, it is the duty of the teachers to give i n both the perspective on a particular topic. They should focus on enlightening the students rather then making the students store the views of the teachers themselves. The teachers are using their designation wrongly and are posing the students a threat. This threat is very dangerous if seen from a student's perspective. The teachers are wrongly using their power to influence the students about one particular topic even if it is wrong or right. This clearly can be seen in a recent incident which happened in the University of Wisconsin when Kevin Barret a professor in the University gave his views on the 9/11 attacks. The views given in by the professors were not proved and rather one sided supported by his own thoughts and perspectives. As the professor had influence on some of the students of the University they took it as reality. This shows that how biased one teacher can be when presenting a topic. The students interviewed during this research clearly showed that their views an d perspectives were similar to that of the teachers. When interviewed they were not fully aware of the facts on one given thought. This shows that the teachers are not providing the students with both the ground facts on one topic, but are rather emphasizing on a one sided story. Thus it is necessary for the teaching system to improve in such a way that it is beneficial for the students. For the teaching system to enhance it is necessary that the teachers provide the students with adequate discussion in the class on a particular topic. Students should be allowed to put in their own personal views when addressing a topic. They should be provided with proper guidance by the teachers so they can pursue a topic. Nowadays the professors are indoctrinating their students rather than educating them. However this

Expanding an MNC Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words - 2
Expanding an MNC - Essay Example However, it was unable to compete with the already established competitors in the market and therefore, the company is now entirely focused on domestic devices required for household work. Overall, Nestfree has around 200 factories in the above mentioned countries with around 150,000 employees worldwide. The range of products provided by Nestfree is as follows: However, the company is now seeking to expand its markets in emerging countries of the world. The emerging markets of China, India and Brazil. The information and relative factors of these countries is provided below. The economic system followed in China is a modern one which is supported by a strong financial services sector. One of the major advantages is that the government has zero debt and the Chinese citizens are savers as compared to the borrowing nature of the citizens of United States. The savings by consumers result in high amounts of capital available for banks to invest. This further boosts up investments in the economy which results in economic growth. The political environment in China is relatively stable as compared to other emerging markets. The political risk involved is quite low however; lower transparency in legal and regulatory policies is a big hurdle for foreign companies. The stability in the political environment is brought about by the one party system which results in lower arguments and therefore, greater peace. The business rules and regulations are not very effective with serious transparency issues. Especially for high tech and commodity companies, the regulatory transparency becomes a major issue as well as a big challenge. The Chinese technological environment is quite advanced and the government plans to make china a world leader in the field of science as well as technology. The aim is to make china self sufficient in terms of technology as a result of effective policies designed by the government. The Chinese
